Thanks to Joe Giordano's Gutter Magazine for turning me onto Japander.com, my new favorite web site. It's a repository of all those Japanese TV commercials featuring Western movie and rock stars (David Bowie is a given) pandering (read: whoring themselves for the Almighty Dollar) Japanese products. Celebrity highlights include Andy Warhol, Michael Jackson and a series of lemon soda commercials featuring The Simpsons dubbed into Japanese. Of the latter, the site comments: "Probably the saddest aspect of these ads is not the blatent commercialism of them completely undermining a large feature of the show, but that the show is primarily recognised by these ads in Japan." Of course, Andy Warhol had no problem with blatent commercialism; art and commerce was a perfect match for him.
