DICK ASS MAN IS HERE ! ! !

Dick Assman (1934 - ) is a Saskatchewan petrol station owner whose name propelled him to celebrity status across North America in 1995. Assman, who worked at Petro-Canada's Victoria Square Mall station in Regina, was discovered by David Letterman, who was amused by his name. Assman was lavishly introduced on July 24, 1995, on The Late Show with David Letterman, where he was a nightly feature for about a month. Live field units in Canada interviewed him for the show. Over the weeks, Assman received a musical tribute from Tony Orlando, while Joe Namath declared himself an "Ass-maniac".
Vancouver polling company Angus Reid reported that 49 percent of surveyed Canadians in September 1995 had heard of his name. Assman received a number of contracts for commercial appearances, was asked to run for public office, and received many marriage proposals. Assmania came to a close in August when Assman visited the Ed Sullivan Theater and was presented with a bouquet of roses by Letterman.

"American Gangster" MOST PIRATED MOVIE EVER ?

"American Gangster," the true story of former New York City drug kingpin Frank Lucas, may have topped the weekend box office take, reeling in $46.1 million.
But that's only the official tally.
Unofficially, the movie that has generated Oscar buzz for stars Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe, both of whom already have Academy Awards, may have taken in tens of millions more.
That's because movie pirates have flooded the underground DVD market with so many copies of "American Gangster" that many folks had already seen the film before its theater debut.
"You don't understand," wrote one blogger in an online discussion among film buffs who are trying to figure out how such a pristine copy of the film hit the Internet and the streets some two weeks before it opened in theaters.
"The 'knockoff' was an exact DVD copy [with] 5.0 Digital sound and perfect picture. This wasn't a copy [by] some dude in a theater with a Samsung Digicam."
Not only was "American Gangster" available on DVD for $5 in such bootleg capitals as Los Angeles and New York, it also was being sold in Philadelphia, Atlanta, Savannah, Ga., Houston and everywhere in between.
Universal Pictures, which made the film for an estimated $100 million, has refused to comment about the proliferation of bootleg copies.
It's the latest in a growing problem that the Motion Picture Association of America estimates costs U.S. motion picture studios more than $6 billion a year.
A 2005 study found that the United States accounted for only a fifth of the lost sales, with the bulk -- 80 percent -- occurring overseas, where bootleg copies are rampant.
Of the bootlegged copies, the study said $3.8 billion -- 62 percent -- was the result of pirated DVDs, while $2.3 billion -- 38 percent -- was the result of Internet piracy. At 90 percent, China had the highest piracy rate -- nine of every 10 potential dollars were lost to viewings of illegal copies -- followed by Russia and Thailand at 79 percent.
China, in particular, has come under fire for movie and music piracy that executives say costs their industries billions, prompting the United States and other countries to seek to negotiate an agreement aimed at curbing the counterfeiting of consumer goods around the world.
"We have some significant challenges ahead," MPAA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Dan Glickman said in a keynote address last week to the Cable & Satellite Broadcasting Association of Asia. "There is no question the evolution of the on-demand world and the new and enhanced power of consumer choice is impacting the habits and preferences of the audiences we serve."
His organization, and the Recording Industry Association of America, have been fighting back. Last year, they launched a holiday campaign in 11 states including Pennsylvania to dissuade the public from buying illegal DVDs and CDs as holiday gifts.
But the piracy continues. While the quality of the "American Gangster" bootleg DVD has set the bar high in terms of illegally copied films, it's not the first film to hit the streets before the theaters this year. "Hostel II" and "Ratatouille" also were available on DVD before their release dates.
Typically, bootlegged copies of films are available about 24 hours after debuting in theaters. But often they are not of the greatest quality and are obtained by video pirates sneaking camcorders into the theaters, which is illegal in 39 states including Pennsylvania.
A first offense in Pennsylvania is considered a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment of not more than five years and/or a fine of $10,000, according to the MPAA. New York City, which this year established a separate law from New York state, is much more lenient. A first offense there is a misdemeanor with up to six months in jail and/or a fine of $1,000 to $5,000.
Piraters also can be snagged under "True Name and Address" statutes, enacted in 45 states, which make it illegal to rent or sell prerecorded movies for home use without including the true name and address of the manufacturer.

WHY STEVE JOBS AND APPLE SUCK ?

TAKEN FROM ZD NET
If I was working over at Apple’s PR department, I think I’d call in sick today. In fact, I think I’d fake something really serious like Ebola or bird flu and try to get the week off, because the brown stuff has hit the fan head on over the bricked iPhones and cleaning up this mess is going to be tricky.
Today's gonna be a rough day for Apple's PR departmentAs far as PR goes, Apple’s enjoyed a long lucky streak. When I look at Apple I see just another multi-billion dollar company who’s prime objective is to add more dollars to the pile, something which Apple’s been very good at lately. Sure, Apple comes out with tech that has a high level of sex appeal, which in turn drives gadget lust and that in turn keeps the dollars flowing in, but it’s the dollars that matter. Others see Apple in a very different light. Some don’t see a corporation with billions of dollars, but instead see an underdog fighting against the oppressive regimes imposed on the poor, defenseless users of technology by other companies. To these people, Steve Jobs isn’t a CEO, but instead a freedom fighter, and a few times a year he and his band of guerrillas come out of hiding to take a stand against “the man” before sinking back into the shadows.
But this iPhone bricking issue is likely to change how some people view Apple. Of crucial importance to Apple is how many people change their view of Apple. It doesn’t matter whether you agree with Apple’s decision to brick unlocked iPhone’s (let’s forget about those bricked iPhones that haven’t been tampered with) or not, you can’t escape the fact that it’s a hugely unpopular move. Jon (DVD Jon) Lech Johansen sums it up well:
Did Sony ever brick PSPs over homebrew software? Did Microsoft ever overwrite someone’s BIOS with garbage because they detected an illegitimate Windows installation?
In light of other things Apple has done lately, such as adding an encrypted hash to the iPod database to lock out non-Apple software and disabling TV-out on the iPod unless the 3rd party accessory you’re using has an Apple authentication chip, it’s evident that Apple is well on its way to become one of the most consumer hostile tech companies.
When Steve Jobs claimed the iPhone was 5 years ahead of every other phone, was he talking about the iPhone’s revolutionary handcuffs?
I just wonder how shiny did Apple executive think the company’s halo was and how much did they think they could get away with? No matter how you try to spin the problem, pushing an update that trashes your own product is not a good move. A far better solution would have been to push an update that just wouldn’t install onto unlocked iPhones. That would have been the right thing to do. Bricking them is wrong. Apple could have done this easily. It didn’t and instead chose to stamp on the little guy.
I’m also surprised and dismayed by Apple’s response so far. This quote is by Apple spokeswoman Jennifer Bowcock:
If the damage was due to use of an unauthorized software application, voiding their warranty, they should purchase a new iPhone
I guess Apple’s never heard of the old phrase “Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice …”
And word of the bricking has spread to folks who’ve never seen an iPhone:
On Saturday I was going to a party at an apartment building. The buzzer wasn’t working, and I took out my shiny new iphone to call and get in. As I was dialing, a few young teenagers were coming out. They wanted to see the iPhone, and so I demo’d it in exchange for entry to the building. (Mmm, security.) As I was heading in, one of them turned back to me to say “Be careful! The updates are bricking those things!”
I found that really interesting–they hadn’t ever touched the phone, but they’d heard about and remembered the risks of patching them and wanted to share.
In the words of the Mastercard ads, that sort of publicity is priceless.
Even the technophiles at Gizmodo have changed their iPhone verdict from a “wait” to “don’t buy” because of the stance that Apple has taken to third party developers:
It’s understandable for Apple to wage a war on unlocking the iPhone, since the company shares revenue from fees with AT&T. But the truth is, if cellphone service was awesome, like it is on iTunes, there wouldn’t be a need to unlock the iPhone. Secondly, bricking these things is totally uncool, and apparently, malicious—according to some early code investigations by the independent iPhone Dev Team, Apple could have avoided this entirely.
…
Screw the unlock for a second. Let’s talk about the those third-party apps. While my 4GB iPhone is a brick, and the 8GB phone, which I kept on a totally legit AT&T contract, is now stripped down. Programs like the faux-GPS, IM clients, Flickr Upload, and NES emulator—what did they ever do but make the iPhone far better than the stock original? They made it far more competitive with open-platform superphones like the Nokia N95, to which I will now be switching.
We also have the obligatory iPhone protest video and calls for a class action lawsuit.
It’s going to be a tough week for the folks at Apple’s PR departmen

JESUS COMES BACK TO PARTY ???

BRUSSELS (AFP) - Catholic bishops in Belgium have protested a TV ad depicting a pot-bellied, hippy Jesus performing miracles and picking up scantily-clad girls up in a nightclub, a church spokesman said Friday.
"We have expressed our disapproval to the president of RTL's administrative council" Jacques Santer and the ethical advertising body, demanding the withdrawal of this publicity campaign, Father Eric de Beukelaer told AFP.
RTL, one of the biggest media groups in Europe, is running the ad on its main Belgian channel to promote Plug youth television, portrayed in the offending item as the coolest thing that even Jesus, with all his powers, could hope for.
"The Belgian Church is used to retaining a sense of humour on religious subjects," De Beukelaer said.
"In the name of freedom of expression, it avoids attacking cartoonists, but advertising is different," he added.
"An advert for cheese or pate featuring gourmet priests or nuns is one thing, but to turn Jesus into a walking billboard, that crosses the line," he said, stressing that along with tolerance must be respect for the sensitivities of believers.
"To see Jesus depicted as a good-for-nothing, backwards adolescent, that crosses the limits of respectability," he added.
The advertisement ends with God admonishing his son Jesus for demanding a subscription to Plug TV, thundering "you still want more!"
Plug TV and RTL-TVI defended the advert, also being shown in cinemas, arguing that it was not blasphemous but contained a message about a "laid-back Jesus addressing youth."
De Beukelaer said that neither RTL nor the ethics panel had responded to a letter from the bishops, adding that the Catholic Church wanted to make its point without having to resort to legal measures.
